1/23/2024 0 Comments High spirits movieOften, these critics appear to have never seen the movie they are condemning, or, worst still, are ignoring the cinematography and entertainment value based on their own petty bias. In recent years, many critics seem especially to have hidden agendas, or have an axe to grind, or are pandering to special interest groups, which render their reviews worthless. Being quickly panned by British critics, and then dissed by their American colleagues, leads me to believe that many critics write negative reviews based on the opinions of others. Reviews of High Spirits by some movie critics are prime proof of the theory that "professional" movie critics often don't what they're talking about. This is just another fine movie ranked far below what it deserves. It received terrible reviews, but it's absolutely worth a viewing if you're ever in the mood for something a little absurd that will make you chuckle. The entire plot is somewhat goofy, as are some of the transitions to get from Point A to Point B, but it is the humor that keeps it alive. ![]() While the whole spouse-swapping aspect of the movie is a little hazy, Beverly D'Angelo and Liam Neeson are grand. The effort that the staff makes to haunt the cynical guests is great, in particular the Lady Godiva/Broggan Banshee fiasco. The Irish country side is lovelyand haunting (incidentally, the movie was filmed in a castle in Limerick,Ireland, where Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes grew up) the set ofthe castle itself is the stuff that fairy tales are made of. Steve Guttenberg does fine, Daryl Hannah is okay. O'Toole's drunken wisdom and fights with his drunken, ghost-talking mother are great. While this film suffers its share of problems, (such as a few holes in the plot, a little shoddy acting here and there) it makes me laugh as few other movies have. Peter O'Toole is hysterical in this film, and quite easily, is the glue that holds it together (contrary to popular opinion). ![]() He is also the last to realize what the heck is going on. I especially like the goofy interaction between Meg Tilly as the nympho and Peter Gallagher as the soon-to-be Priest. Everyone in the movie is fantastic because, though some may start out to be quite annoying (such as the self-declared "professional parasychologist" or the cynical Sharon (D'Angelo)), they eventually come to be very entertaining as the movie goes along. ![]() But how does a ghost and a human end up together (and they have to end up together.after all it's a Hollywood love story)? Well, that's why you have to watch the movie. The ghosts keep playing out the murder over and over again, and Jack, accidently intervening in one of the reenactments, somehow frees Mary from the murder. Jack actually starts to fall in love with one of the ghosts, a Plunkett ancestry named Mary (Daryl Hannah), a sickley looking young girl who died by the knife of her husband (Liam Neesom). Guttenberg is Jack, a sorry guy who's married to a real dull lady (Beverly D'Angelo) that really can't stand to know him, especially when he drags her out to some stupid castle. The movie is a romantic comedy, of course, though it could've worked simply as a story of the funny occurences in the haunted castle as Plunkett and his frantic guests scurry about trying to deal with the situation any way that they can. And this is where the movie really starts to get funny because everyone, after their various confrontations with the undead and all the strange things that start to happen in the castle, start to become so neurotic as they try to figure out what's going on. But Plunkett and the gang (nor their furious guests) would ever have imagined real ghosts showing up. No, Plunkett's plan involves a few crappy props and some cheap scare tactics to thrill their small group of American guests. Of course, Plunkett doesn't believe in the existence of ghosts, especially when he hasn't seen any for himself, despite his mother's attempts to convince him that they're everywhere. And so, the guests are invited to stay among the spirits of the Plunkett family. After talking with his looney, but sincere old mother who always claims that she talks to his dead father and the rest of the poor spirits looming around the dark castle, Plunkett decides that the castle ought to be haunted. The old fashioned castle needs a clever advertising gimmick to entice visitors. Peter Plunkett (Peter O'Toole), and his gang of merry Irishmen are facing foreclosure on their grand castle resort. ![]() High Spirits turned out to be a pretty good comedy.

Older versions of slack could be hacked to display better, why not the latest? Seriously, this looks like amateur hour. Seriously, how hard is it to adjust the style sheet? I’ve read that Slack is just a glorified Chrome app. One annoying bit is the lack of a dark theme for the main message area. Nice feature to delete messages and it archives shared images and docs automatically. Plenty of useful things within the threads or PMs. Overall Slack is a good messaging/chat/sharing app. Good chat app, just a few annoying things Interesting idea about "sleeping" a workspace! You've given us some great food for thought here- thanks for sharing this with us! This would primarily be used for chats of lower priority than others. disable background updates for those groups until I explicitly “un-sleep” it. Would love to be able to “sleep” less important chats e.g. For someone like me, who uses Slack for 9 different groups, having each of those chats actively run leads to each spinning up a Slack Helper process that consumes a fair amount of CPU. One thing I would LOVE to see is the ability to “sleep” a group, so that it didn’t have to be always running in the background. Didn’t have this issue before so I’m sure this is an optimization they just need to make. However, noticed with recent update that the "Slack Helper" processes are chugging CPU time, so much so that the fans on my top-spec Macbook Pro run on medium to high. Also a big fan of the styling, makes work chat less boring! Saves me a lot of time with its built-in features as well as the available integrations. LOUIS – United States District Court Judge John A. 1/23/2024 0 Comments Robert forster wolf of snow hollowNL: You wrote, directed, and starred in the film, which is an emerging trend in your work. I was lucky to have been a producer who was already making things, as I had seen filmmakers fail and struggle to recover from it, so I knew that my focus was getting back to my garage and trying to make something impressive for the heroes who support me. Winning the awards and getting into festivals, and all the glitz and glamour that comes with those things is really fun, but it can often be a terrible distraction. The chance to level up together really inspired me and told me that it was possible to make movies like this. JC: It was a wonderful confidence boost, not just because of the acclaim and being on the world stage, but because it gave me the opportunity to take my team of five years straight into this crazy bloody snow globe of a production. NL: How much of a confidence boost and sense of artistic freedom did the success of Thunder Road give you when it came to considering future projects? So to get things rolling production-wise wasn’t that difficult, but we soon realised that we had to scale up quickly as there was a thousand things we hadn’t considered when making a movie with 55 people on set, rather than seven. Suddenly there we were, in the middle of Utah in the snow, ready to shoot as early as March 2019 because we had the same team around us, all of whom love making movies. ![]() This being my first studio movie made it a completely different endeavor, but we were able to pitch and get the film greenlit relatively quickly after Thunder Road came out in September 2018. JIM CUMMINGS: We were very lucky in the sense that I had already done nine or 10 single take short films in the year and a half leading up to Thunder Road, so by that point we were a well-oiled machine. Was it easy to come down from that high and get straight back into the action on The Wolf of Snow Hollow? NICHOLAS LAY: Thunder Road was an instant cult classic that promoted indie filmmaking in its purest form. Set The Tape’s Nicholas Lay caught up with the maverick director to discuss his rapid ascent, the evolution of his filmmaking process, and working with the late screen legend Robert Forster. I would rather get a colonoscopy then see this again. After taking the indie scene by storm in 2018 with his crowdfunded sensation Thunder Road, Jim Cummings is back behind and in front of the camera with his delicious black-comedy-horror The Wolf of Snow Hollow. I am so incredibly disappointed I spent six dollars renting this film. There was a random dude smoking black tar for no reason, the main characters dad I think died but that was never talked about or brought up again so to the audience, really he could have just left for lunch or something. Then the movies pseudo twist ending contradicted what you'd already seen in the film. This is the most incompetent writing I've ever experienced and incoherent sequence of events ever committed to film with no rhyme or reason as to why. The self congratulating, no self falaciating, writer/producer/star spends the entire movie firing people for no reason, fighting things or people for no reason, and never shutting the hell up. I had to find this reddit post just to vent about how horrible this movie is. The writing is horrible, it's not funny, the acting is sh*t, I just am at a loss for words on why people like this film. This was one of the worst films I've ever seen. Spoiler! Turns out that the werewolf is just a guy in a suit. The main character is beyond annoying, and spends most of his screen time screaming at people. There's nothing for me to care about in the plot. They are the only two actors in the piece of shit film who manage to deliver their lines somewhat convincingly. Riki Lindhome is in this and completely wasted (should have been the lead), and so is Robert Foster. He has like seven different screaming meltdowns (for no reason), which I think the film thinks is hysterical, but it so isn't. ![]() He's playing this neurotic cop, but his performance is so unnatural and just constantly screams "I'm acting". I then did some research and learnt that he's the director - oops. My first thought was that maybe this would have been salvageable if it hadn't been for the lead actor. ![]() It just comes off as painfully unfunny and awkward because nobody on earth speaks like this. In my film classes, there were always those students who thought Edgar Wright was the second coming, so in their short films they'd try to write the same kind of witty dialogue. 1/23/2024 0 Comments Shadow era review![]() We want our deck to have an underlying theme that runs through it like red tape and not just a loose assortment of totally unrelated goals. Having up to 6 basic goals only brings us so far. Just remember that we can still sack cards of 1 or 2 goals that seem not so important vs our current opponent. I personally tend to keep my options open, being able to adjust. ![]() For example if we decide to run no item destruction, this can really kick us in the behind vs certain opponents. The danger in specialising our deck more and more though is, that we may fall prey to specific counter decks. If we are playing a heavy burn deck for example we probably want to put more emphasis on direct damage and formulate the same goal more than once (2×6 cards for “Burn!!!”) or allocate more cards to it. We may also formulate less goals and increase the card count per goal.Ħ cards should be the minimum for any given goal, not the optimum or maximum in every case. Voila, after setting some very simple goals, the basis of our deck is complete! Let’s add 3 more good creatures to the mix then, that also help balancing out the resource curve: 3 Pack Wolf. I quickly realize I am only running 12 creatures, 6 of those high cost. I use the last 3 to balance my deck out as I see fit. Our deck is almost complete! I used up 36 of my 39 available cards. Those cards also play a very important role: Cards that are an easy decision for being sacced as resources!Įxample needed to be moved here due to maximum characters limit. Don’t worry about formulating goals that do not help against every deck. When thinking about these don’t forget about the Resource Curve of our deck. With this principle in mind we can formulate up to 6 basic goals (6×6 = 36 out of an ideal sized deck of 39 cards) we would like to achieve with our deck. A solid basis to start from, backed up by game experience. Why at least six cards? One part gut feeling, the other part is even in round 1 you will have one of the cards that supports your goal in close to 3 out of 4 times. It derives from my own experience in which a goal represented with less than 6 cards in a deck of 40 is just not a reliable option if you are counting on those cards continually throughout a whole lot of matches. This principle is supposed to provide a quick and easy way to build, refine and double check a deck for the current 40c format. ![]() A different deck size would have effect on all numbers, though the main idea would remain the same: Put at least X cards in your deck to support a specific goal, otherwise you won’t be able to achieve this goal consistently. ![]() The numbers are tailored towards a 40 card deck (hero + 39 cards). I – Getting started aka Motivation behind this Principle With this guide I would not only like to help newcomers to build competitive decks, but also offer veteran players a way to quickly review their deck’s reliability and structure.įormulate (up to) 6 basic goals for your deck and support these with at least 6 cards each.
